AI for RF/MMIC PA Design: Methodology, Constraints, and Validation

By zaprf Engineering

AI-assisted RF design only works when the workflow is constrained by physics, process limits, and measurable acceptance criteria.

Methodology

  1. Define target specs with measurable pass/fail thresholds.
  2. Generate candidate topologies and parameterized layouts.
  3. Run circuit-level filtering before expensive EM solves.
  4. Execute EM optimization loops with bounded search.
  5. Rank candidates by yield-aware objective functions.

Constraints

  • PDK and process-rule compliance is non-negotiable.
  • EM mesh and solver settings must be reproducible.
  • Optimization should enforce hard constraints before scoring soft goals.

Validation

  • Compare AI-assisted versus manual baseline on cycle time and achieved metrics.
  • Track failed candidates to improve future search priors.
  • Keep an auditable record of spec, settings, and final accepted layout.
